How to Perform a Tech Deck Trick: Step-by-Step Guide

Tech Decks, also known as fingerboards, are miniature skateboards that allow you to perform impressive tricks with your fingers. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do a basic Tech Deck trick to get you started:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • A Tech Deck fingerboard
  • A smooth, flat surface
  • Patience and practice

Step 1: Select Your Trick

  1. Choose a basic Tech Deck trick to start with. Some popular tricks for beginners include the kickflip, ollie, or pop shove-it. For this guide, we’ll use the kickflip as an example.

Step 2: Hand Placement 2. Hold your Tech Deck with your index and middle fingers on the top side of the deck, and your thumb on the bottom side, near the tail. Your fingers should be positioned evenly along the width of the deck.

Step 3: Ready Stance 3. Begin in a ready stance, with your index finger positioned near the front bolts (front truck) of the Tech Deck, and your middle finger placed closer to the tail.

Step 4: Tail Pop 4. For a kickflip, apply slight downward pressure on the tail of the Tech Deck using your middle finger. This will cause the tail to pop upwards.

Step 5: Flick the Kickflip 5. As the tail pops, simultaneously use your index finger to flick the edge of the Tech Deck’s nose diagonally towards the opposite side. This flicking motion will make the Tech Deck perform a kickflip.

Step 6: Catch and Land 6. Keep an eye on the rotation of the Tech Deck and prepare to catch it on its way down. Aim to land all four wheels simultaneously back on the surface.

Step 7: Practice and Refinement 7. Tricks require practice to master. Start with basic tricks and gradually move on to more advanced ones. Focus on your finger positioning, timing, and the strength of your flick for consistent performance.

Tips for Success:

  • Begin with gentle movements and gradually add more force as you refine your technique.
  • Keep your fingers close to the deck for better control.
  • Maintain a flat and smooth practice surface for consistent performance.
  • Watch tutorial videos or observe skilled fingerboarders to learn advanced tricks and techniques.

Remember that fingerboarding with a Tech Deck is a skill that improves with practice. Be patient, practice regularly, and enjoy the process of learning and mastering various tricks.
